Welcome to our FAQ page! We've put together answers to some of the most common questions we receive about Spiritualism, our church, and what to expect when you visit. If you don't find your answer here, please don't hesitate to Contact Us.
1. What is Spiritualism?
Spiritualism is a religion, a philosophy, and a science based on the belief in the continuity of life after physical death and the ability to communicate with those in the Spirit world. It is founded on the understanding that there is no death — only a transition to a different state of existence.
We follow the Seven Principles of Spiritualism, which serve as a guide to our spiritual understanding, ethical living, and connection with universal laws.
2. Is Spiritualism compatible with other religions (e.g., Christianity)?
Spiritualism is often seen as complementary to other faiths, as it emphasises universal spiritual truths such as love, compassion, personal responsibility, and the continuity of life after death. While it has its own unique principles, many people from diverse religious backgrounds — including Christianity — find comfort, insight, and spiritual growth within Spiritualism without needing to abandon their existing beliefs.
We warmly welcome individuals from all walks of life, regardless of religious affiliation.
3. What happens at a Spiritualist church service?
Our services typically include a welcome, hymns, an opening prayer, an inspirational address (talk), a period of healing prayer, and most notably, a demonstration of mediumship. The service concludes with a closing prayer. The overall aim is to bring comfort, inspiration, and evidence of spirit communication.
4. What is a medium?
A medium is someone who serves as a bridge between the physical world and the Spirit world. Through heightened sensitivity and spiritual awareness, mediums receive and relay messages, guidance, and evidence from those who have passed on. Their purpose is to bring comfort, healing, and proof of the continued existence of the soul beyond physical death.
5. Will I get a message from the medium?
Not necessarily, but it’s certainly possible! Mediums connect with Spirit in various ways, and messages are delivered to individuals in the congregation as directed by the Spirit world. While not everyone will receive a personal message at every service, the purpose of the demonstration is to provide evidence of the continuity of life — which benefits everyone present, not just those who receive a direct communication. Even if you don’t receive a message, many find the experience uplifting and affirming.
6. Do I have to participate or do anything I'm uncomfortable with?
Absolutely not. You are welcome to simply sit, observe, and enjoy the service at your own comfort level. Participation is always voluntary, and you will never be asked to do anything you're uncomfortable with. We respect each individual’s personal boundaries and spiritual journey.
7. How long do services last?
Our services typically run for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
8. Do I need to book or register to attend a service?
No, you can simply turn up for our regular Thursday evening services. For special events or workshops, booking might be required, so please check our Calendar for details.
9. Is there a charge to attend services?
Our regular services are free to attend. We do take a freewill offering (collection) during the service, but there is no obligation to contribute. Special events or workshops may have a ticket fee to cover expenses.
